FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Colorado State softball team finished the Colorado State Classic undefeated with three victories on Sunday against St. John's and Idaho State. The St. John's and first Idaho State game were resumed from earlier in the weekend since they were halted due to darkness. The Rams picked up wins in the resumed games against the Red Storm, 16-3 in five innings and 15-6 in six innings against the Bengals. CSU closed the weekend with an 8-1 victory versus Idaho State.
[ST. JOHN'S RECAP]
Box Score
St. John's scored the first run with an infield single, but the lead was short lived. The Rams scored in their first chance as Hannah McCorkhill knocked an infield hit to score Sarah Muzik from third and tied the game 1-1.
In the second inning, Colorado State's offense irrupted, scoring 12 runs on 13 hits to lead 13-1. With one out, the Rams went on a nine-hit hitting spree, which included three-consecutive doubles, a triple and a home run. Of the 13 hits recorded in the frame, there were six singles, four doubles, one triple and two home runs.
St. John's scored two runs in the top of the third off of base hits, but CSU wouldn't let the Red Storm get even close. The Rams added three runs in the bottom of the inning after Sarah Muzik hit a single to right field, which turned into a base clearing homer after a SJU error. Muzik pushed two runs across before scoring herself to put the score, 16-3.
The game was then halted due to darkness and resumed Sunday afternoon.
St. John's put two aboard the last two innings, but couldn't push any across ending the game in the fifth due to the run rule.
[IDAHO STATE RECAPS]
Box Score
Colorado State took the lead early and kept it the whole game. Corina Gamboa started the scoring for CSU in the bottom of the first after doubling to right center to score two runs. The Rams added a run in the second after Ashley Michelena smashed a single up the middle to score Navarro who led the inning off with a double.
Idaho State scored two runs in the third after an inside the park home run cut Colorado State's lead to one.
CSU put two runners on in the bottom of the third before Hayleigh Evans reached on a field error and the two baserunners scored. Ashley Michelena followed with a double to left center to clear the bases and to score two more runs to give the Rams a 7-2 lead.
The Rams' offense looked to make the game short as they scored five runs on five hits in the fourth. Colorado State had another three doubles in the inning which helped increase its lead to 12-2 heading into the final three outs by the run rule.
Idaho State wouldn't let it end that early as the Bengals scored four runs in the top of the fifth. During the inning, the game was halted due to darkness and play would resume on Sunday.
Colorado State needed two runs in the bottom of the fifth to end the game early, but couldn't find the offense until the sixth inning. The Rams loaded the bases before Lauren Buchanan singled to short to score a run. Haley Donaldson followed with another single to third base, which let two more runs score and to win the game by the run rule, 15-6.
Box Score
In game two against the Bengals, the Rams were the first to make a mark on the scoreboard in the second inning when Ashley Michelena tripled down the right-field line to score a pair of runs.
ISU responded in the next inning with a sac fly to center field to score a run and put the score at 2-1.
The Rams increased their lead in the bottom of the third after Hannah McCorkhill knocked a two-out single to left to push a run across. Isabella Navarro followed, reaching on a fielding error by the third baseman to score another run and to lead, 4-1.
Colorado State kept Idaho State at bay down the stretch, while adding runs in the fifth and sixth innings to secure the 8-1 victory.
QUOTES
Head Coach Jen Fisher on the offense and outscoring opponents 49-14 over the weekend …
"It was good to get that kind of production from our offense this weekend, since we have been working on getting our bats going again and producing. It is also a great confidence building for our players. We played around with the lineup quite a bit and having (Lauren) Buchanan batting in the two-spot was unconventional, but she was getting us run production, which was good."
Coach Fisher on the pitching…
"We didn't use (Alison) Petty this weekend, which she was ready to go, but Bridgette Hutton was pitching extremely well and I thought we should keep throwing her. Looking ahead to conference, that might happen where Hutton will have to throw three days in-a-row, not necessarily starting, but ready to come in as relief. Overall this weekend, I thought Hutton and our pitching staff did a really nice job."
Coach Fisher on the non-conference schedule…
"We were a little inconsistent, but I liked how we competed and how many different looks we got over the last month. We were able to play around with our lineup offensively at pinch hitting and also defensively with playing different people in the outfield and infield. Our confidence was really high to start the season and then it dropped off. We started relying on our pitchers to get all the outs and we weren't scoring runs. We played a few Top-25 teams and played against teams in really good conferences. I definitely think we got what we needed to out of our non-conference schedule."
STAT OF THE DAY
Ashley Michelena finished the day with a team-best eight RBI and six hits. She slugged 1.250 on the day with two doubles and a triple.
