Recap: Rams fall against South Dakota State in first round of NISC
5/16/2018 7:03:00 PM | Softball
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Colorado State softball team fell against South Dakota State, 11-1 in five innings in the first round of the National Invitational Softball Championship (NISC) played at Gloria Rodriguez Field in Greeley, Colo.
South Dakota State exploded in the first inning with five runs on four hits. Bridgette Hutton started the game and was relieved with just one out in the frame. Kaylynn Pierce continued in the circle and allowed just one hit and a run before getting off the field.
Amber Nelson recorded Colorado State's first hit of the game in the second inning with a single through the right side. Unfortunately, CSU couldn't convert her into a run.
The Jackrabbits added to their lead in the fourth with three runs on five hits to lead 8-0. SDSU added insurance runs in the top of the fifth with another three runs on three hits.
Colorado State's offense showed signs of life in the fifth inning as Tara Shadowen pinch hit and knocked a two-out double to right center. Sarah Muzik followed and hit her third triple of the season to right field, which scored Shadowen and avoided the shutout.
QUOTES
Head Coach Jen Fisher on the game…
"South Dakota State is No. 2 team in the country in doubles and that was obvious today. Some of those hits would have been home runs at our park. It is a big field here and they really put the pressure on us early with doubles in the gaps and scoring from first. We missed a few cuts and we put ourselves in a big hole right away. Today was definitely not the best that we can play and not the best that we can pitch or hit. We will just try and regroup and come out and have a stronger showing tomorrow."
Head Coach Fisher on adjustments that need to be made at the plate…
"We need to swing at our pitch. We were chasing our pitches and pulling stuff that we were looking for or that we were sitting on; instead of fouling it off for a strike, we need to be driving it for a hit. We have more of a shot if we hit our pitch and not the pitchers."
STAT OF THE DAY
Tara Shadowen came in to pinch hit and knocked a double before scoring on the following play by Sarah Muzik's triple.
NOTES
- The Rams played in their first postseason game for the first time since 2003. It was also their first time playing in the NISC.

- Sarah Muzik tallied the lone RBI on triple in the fifth frame
- CSU allowed 13 hits in the loss, including four doubles
- Jordan Acosta recorded her third stolen base of the season
- Bridgette Hutton was given the loss after starting the game and going just 1/3 of an inning. CSU used all three pitchers on the roster in the game. The trio combined for 10 earned runs with two strikeouts and six walks
- The Rams were aggressive at the plate, striking out just once
