Compiling the most wins by a women’s basketball team in school history, the Rams opened the 1998-99 season with 12 victories and then won the next 19 games after their first loss. Coach Tom Collen then took his team to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament before losing to UCLA. The Rams finished seventh nationally, the highest finish for any women’s basketball team in school history and second-highest for any woman’s team in any sport.  Collen was named WAC Pacific Division coach of the year while Becky Hammon was named as a consensus first-team All-American and Katie Cronin was named as a third-team Kodak All-American. Both Hammon and Cronin were named first-team All-WAC, and Heather Hannen was a second-team All-WAC player.
