Sonny Lubick’s third conference championship in four seasons, CSU’s only losses were to No. 8 Colorado and to Air Force. After the loss to the Falcons, the Rams won nine consecutive games, including the WAC championship game against New Mexico and the Liberty Bowl against No. 19 Missouri, becoming the first team in program history to post 11 wins in a single season. Lubick earned WAC coach of the year honors. Quarterback Moses Moreno was named the WAC Offensive Player of the year and offensive guard Anthony Cesario was named a Sporting News second-team All-American. The 1997 Rams had six first team All-WAC honorees, and five second team all-conference selections.  Lubick was named the 1997 WAC Coach of the year.
