Brian Bedard is the perfect example of the great legacy of Ram track athletes who have gone on to become champion coaches at Colorado State University. Bedard began his career at CSU as a freshman walk-on in 1983 and by his senior year finished as the runner-up in the discus for the Western Athletic Conference. After graduating from CSU in 1988, he began his career as a throwing coach for the Rams track team. He coached discus champions such as Mattias Borrman, Shelly Greathouse-Borrman, Liz Toman, Brian Trainor and national champions Casey Malone and Loree Smith, to name a few.Â
In 2006, Bedard took over as the head coach of CSU Track and Field and continued the legacy of Ram track coaches who have also competed for the school. In his tenure as head coach, Bedard led the women’s team to the school’s first ever outdoor conference championships in 2008 and was named as the 2008 Mountain West Conference Women’s Coach of the Year. He continues to lead the Rams track program becoming only the second school in Mountain West History to sweep conference track titles with both genders in 2019. Bedard has guided a total of 16 MWC championship teams.Â
