Dan Beattie is the first track and field athlete in school history to win an All-American award and only the second athlete in school history named to an All-America team. Beattie was a native of Fort Collins and excelled in both track and football during his career at the school when it was known as Colorado Agricultural College. He helped lead the football team as a fullback and end to the 1927 conference championship and was instrumental in the Aggies’ 1928 conference championship in track. Beattie won All-American honors in 1929 for both discus and hammer, becoming the first two-time All-American in school history. He also won numerous Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference championships and set the conference record for discus in 1929.

After graduation, Beattie briefly coached the fall and winter track teams while head coach Harry Hughes concentrated on football. He also assisted the Aggies football team at his alma mater in 1939 for that lone season. In 1933, Beattie went on to be a math teacher and coach of track and football in the Poudre R-1 School District for four decades teaching at Fort Collins High School and later becoming an administrator retiring in 1971. In 1971, Beattie Elementary School in Fort Collins was named in his honor. Dan Beattie died on March 20, 1982 at the age of 74.
