Don “Lefty” Straub played three sports at Colorado A&M, but it was his amazing career on the Aggies’ baseball team which garnered his greatest accolades. A Navy veteran of WWII, Straub came to Colorado A&M College from Pittsburgh, Pa., as a halfback on the football team, a swimmer for coach Tommy Tompkin and a left-handed pitcher for coach Mark Duncan’s baseball squad. Straub left his mark on CSU’s baseball history posting 102 strikeouts in 1950 en-route to an 11-2 record and the first and only appearance by an Aggie or Rams team in the College World Series. He guided the Aggies to the 1950 Skyline Conference championship recording 15 strikeouts and hitting a home run in the three-game series.

After his career at Colorado A&M, Straub went on to the minor leagues playing for the Denver Bears in the early 1950s before a torn rotator cuff ended his career. Straub went on to work for the Coors Brewing Company and retired in Windsor, Colo. On May 18, 2018, Straub passed away at the age of 93.
