Drew Loftin set the school record for the hammer at 233 feet, becoming a four-time All-American and the first Ram to win the Mountain West championship in three throwing events. Loftin came to CSU from Woodland Park, Colo., and by the time he graduated in 2003, he was ranked in the top five of multiple throws. Loftin also competed in the weight throw and was the runner-up in the NCAA in his senior year. He was ranked as the nation’s top hammer thrower by the NCAA in 2003 and remains as one of the finest throwers in CSU history.
After graduation, Loftin set his sights on the 2004 Olympics finishing 12th in the US Olympic Trials. He then took a break from his athletic career to attend graduate school and become a physician’s assistant. In 2009, Loftin realized how much he missed athletics and once again began training for the 2012 Olympics. He finished seventh in the USA Championship meet in 2009 and in 2010 finished third in the USA Championship meet. By 2012 he was ranked third in the nation going into the Olympic Trials, where he placed fifthon June 21, 2012.
