Jack Upton was recruited to CSU by coach Sark Arslanian as a tight end on the Rams football team, but found his true niche as an athlete on the baseball diamond rather than the gridiron. In only two seasons Upton recorded five all-time Ram baseball records which included most home runs in a game (3), highest batting average in a season (.506 in 1979), 60 career runs, 82 hits and 20 doubles. His .506 batting average in 1979 led the nation and also was the second-highest in NCAA history to that date.  Upton also set two WAC records, one for highest slugging percentage and the other for four consecutive home runs. Upton decided to leave CSU after his junior year for a career in professional baseball and did not have a senior season in a Rams uniform.

Upton was chosen in the 14th round by the Chicago Cubs in the 1979 MLB draft and played four seasons in minor league baseball. He made it to the Iowa Cubs of AAA, but did not continue his baseball career after that.
