Men’s Basketball (2005 to 2007)

Jason Smith established himself as one of the greatest men’s basketball performers with a stellar career.  A native of Greeley, Colo., and graduate of Platte Valley High School, Smith came to CSU in 2005 and immediately set the tone for his career by being named Mountain West Freshman of the Year. He backed up his debut season by being named a first-team all-conference honoree in 2006 and 2007. Smith led the Rams in rebounds and scoring in both the 2006 and 2007 seasons and graduated as one of the most prolific scorers, rebounders and shot blockers in program history.

In 2007 Smith became the second Ram to be chosen in the first round of the NBA Draft when the Miami Heat picked him as the 20th-overall selection. He was soon traded to the Philadelphia 76ers where he played in 76 games as a rookie. A knee injury took him out of the 2008-09 season, but Smith came back for another year in Philadelphia the following season. Jason Smith spent 13 seasons in the NBA, the longest any CSU men’s basketball player has ever been at the highest level of professional basketball. He retired after the 2018-19 season.

Other Accomplishments:
  • Team MVP (2006 and 2007)
  • 304 rebounds in 2007, third all-time
  • First-round pick in 2007 NBA Draft
