Jim Ranson came to Colorado A&M from the Canyon City area to play in four sports as he earned his physical education degree. During his playing career, Ranson, on numerous occasions, would play a baseball game and run track on the same day. The outstanding baseball player once accepted a challenge from fellow baseball teammates he could high jump better than other track athletes. In his street clothes, Ranson made the better jump while coach Harry Hughes watched, making the team on-sight. He also excelled in basketball and played football, concluding his career as the runner-up for the 1950 Nye Award.

After graduation, Ranson played in the minor leagues of baseball ending his career at the AAA level. In 1959, Ranson became the head basketball coach at Pueblo Central High School where he took nine teams to the state tournament, playing in two state championship games. He coached at Pueblo Central until 1989 when he retired. In 2009 the school honored him by naming the basketball court in his honor. Ranson passed away May 7, 2018 at the age of 89.
