Football (1995 to 1998)

Joey Porter’s career at CSU began on the offensive side of the ball rather than what many fans remember him as a legendary defensive threat. Porter first played H-back and wide receiver in 1995 and 1996 before it was realized his athletic talents would be better served on defense. In 1997 Porter switched to the defensive line where he honed his talents to sack the opposing quarterback six times. Porter teamed up with Clark Haggans to help guide the Rams to the 1997 WAC championship and a win in the Holiday Bowl against Missouri. In 1998 he recorded 14 quarterback sacks, which still stoood second on the school’s single-season record list as of his 2013 induction. Porter earned first-team All-WAC honors in 1998 and was invited to play in the 1998 East-West Shrine Game and Senior Bowl.

Porter was chosen in the third round of the 1999 NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers where he refined his talent as a great linebacker and became one of the premier defensive players in the NFL. He spent 13 seasons with the Steelers, Dolphins and Cardinals before retiring in 2012, recording 98 career quarterback sacks. Porter helped lead the Steelers to the World Championship in 2005. Porter returned to CSU in 2013 to complete his degree and joined the coaching staff as a graduate assistant, helping the Rams to win the 2013 New Mexico Bowl. Porter was an assistant coach with the Steelers from 2014 to 2018.
