Football (1951 to 1953)
Kay Dalton played for coach Bob Davis in the early 1950s as a tight end, earning academic honors as one of the team’s leaders on the football field. It was his post-CSU career which earned him recognition as one of the most premier college and pro football coaches to come out of Colorado State University. Dalton, a 1954 Colorado A&M graduate, coached at Trinidad State (1959 to 1963) after earning his master’s Degree from CSU in 1958. He moved on to Western State College (1962 to 1967) and coached for six seasons in the Canadian Football League. He then spent time as an assistant coach in the NFL with the Broncos, Bills, Chiefs and Oilers from 1974 to 1987.
Dalton returned to his alma mater in 1988 as the offensive coordinator for the Rams, moving on to the University of Northern Colorado, where as the offensive coordinator, helped lead the Bears to two consecutive Division II National Championships in 1997 and 1998. Dalton took over as the head coach at UNC in 2000 serving six years for the Bears before his retirement in 2005.
