Track and Field (1972 to 1975)
Marshall Smith was recruited out of Colorado Springs by legendary CSU track coach Del Hessel and worked his way toward becoming a highly distinguished discuss champion during his four years as a Ram. In his freshman year of 1972, Smith broke the CSU freshman record in discus and went on to win the USA-USSR Junior World Competition in July. In his sophomore year he won the US Junior National Championship along with the Kansas and Colorado relays. In 1974 he finished third at the NCAA Championships and fourth at the AAU championships setting a CSU record in the discus throw which stood for 27 years. Smith was more than just an athlete, as in 1975-76, he was a finalist for the Rhodes Scholar and was a runner-up for an NCAA post-graduate scholarship award.Â
