A two-time All-American, Mekana Barnes was a 2007 third team AVCA All-American and honorable mention All-American in 2008. In both 2007 and 2008, she ranked in the top five blockers in the nation, and in 2007, Barnes was the only player in the NCAA to rank in the top 10 for both blocks and kills per set. She was the fifth Ram to be named as the national player of the week, a feat she earned on September 4, 2007. Barnes was a part of three conference championship, with regular season titles in 2004 and 2007 and the Mountain West tournament in 2006. At the conclusion of her career, she ranked second in career block assists and block assists for a season. She also led the conference in block assists in 2008. Barnes earned all-conference honors three times and was the 2007 MW Player of the Year. In 2009, Barnes was honored as the Virginia Frank Award winner for most outstanding female athlete of the year at CSU. In 2008 and 2009, she was honored by the Sportswomen of Colorado. After CSU, Barnes played on the US National  second team in 2010, then played professionally in Puerto Rico and Spain.
