Football (1975 to 1978)

Mike Bell remains as one of the greatest football players in school history more than 30 years after he played his last game for the green and gold. The twin brother of Mark E. Bell, Mike played on the defensive line and teamed up with Al “Bubba” Baker to create an amazing defense in the 1970s. An All-WAC player in 1977 and 1978, Bell also received WAC lineman of the year in 1977 following his 103 tackles and 15 sacks. He finished his CSU career with 25 quarterback sacks. The Associated Press named him to their second team All-America in 1977 and he followed that up in 1978 as a consensus All-American receiving national attention.

Bell was a runner-up for the 1978 Outland Trophy and also garnered attention from Sports Illustrated and the Associated Press as the national lineman of the week following his four quarterback sacks in the 1977 Arizona State Game.

Mike Bell was chosen as the second pick in the 1979 NFL draft by the Kansas City Chiefs, the second-highest overall pick of any CSU player. Bell, a native of Wichita, Kansas, played 12 seasons for his hometown team and recorded 490 tackles, 10 fumble recoveries and 52 quarterback sacks in a stellar career with the Chiefs.
