Football (1995 to 1998)

Mike Newell ranks as one of the finest offensive linemen in CSU football history. A graduate of Littleton High School, Newell came to CSU in the fall of 1994 and redshirted his first season. In 1995 he played guard and soon moved center for the next three seasons, starting 36 games from 1996-1998. He is a four-time Academic All-WAC winner and was named to the All-WAC first team in 1998 and second-team All-WAC Pacific Division in 1997. He was a member of three WAC championship teams and was the anchor on an offensive line (which included fellow Hall of Fame inductee Anthony Cesario), a unit which did not give up a sack during the 1997 and 1998 seasons.

After graduation, Newell played five seasons with the Packers, Rams and Texans in the NFL and one season in NFL Europe. While a member of the 2001 St. Louis Rams, Newell went to Super Bowl XXXVI and also played with the NFL Europe’s Scottish Claymores in the 2000 World Bowl. Following his pro career, Newell began his career in education as a physical education teacher at Mead Middle School 2004-2011 and then a PE teacher at Longmont Estates Elementary School 2001 to present.
