Rich Harris remains as one of the all-time most outstanding long distance runners in school history, amassing four All-American awards while running for the Rams. He set the school record in the 1,500 meters and also set the school record of 4:02 in the mile during his career at CSU. Harris won the WAC championship in the 1980 indoor mile and ranked as high as fourth in the nation for the indoor mile in 1979. Harris also finished seventh in the 1979 NCAA championships for the 1,500 meter and fifth in the AAU nationals for the same event in 1979.
After graduation, Harris ran professionally with Nike as a sponsor, and in 1984, he recorded the 12th-fastest mile in US History missing the world record by 4 seconds. Harris later went into business in Idaho where he owns and operates a shoe store for runners. While he competed at CSU he wore a trademark bandana; his shoe store is appropriately named “Bandana”.
