Tom Hilbert become the winningest head coach of any sport in CSU history, men’s or women’s, guiding the Rams through the 2022 season. A native of Norman, Okla., Hilbert graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1984 and first coached at OU as an assistant for two seasons before moving on as a head coach at Idaho for four seasons. He then accepted the head coaching position of CSU’s volleyball program in 1997. Hilbert’s volleyball teams played in the NCAA tournament his first 25 seasons at the helm. In 2010, Hilbert passed the legendary Jim Williams for all-time wins in school history for a coach in any sport with 312, finishing with an 811-236 career mark, 637-164 at CSU. Hilbert coached 13 AVCA All-Americans and dozens of all-conference performers.Â
The Rams won 17Â conference championships under Hilbert, five conference tournament championships and reached the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament six times. He was named AVCA Region Coach of the year twice. He ranked among the top 10 of all NCAA active coaches for wins, winning percentage and NCAA tournament appearances at the time of his retirement.Â
