The Colorado State Women?s Swimming team is looking towards the start of their dual meet season October 10 against Rice University who will fly in from Texas for the head-to-head competition. The Owls will then travel north to take on the Cowboys in Laramie, Wyoming on Oct. 11th. The last time CSU met Rice was 1998 when the Rams came out victorious, 154-108.
CSU is returning seven individuals (Melissa Fischer, Corinne Hofstetter, Elizabeth Jones, Katie Peck, Jamie Robinson, Lyndsey McCaslin and Kristen Schneider) who swam to top five times in school history in their specialty events and two others (Rachelle Kula and Paula Langner) who made the record books in relays. Lori Vigil also will be diving for the Rams. Vigil earned her own acclaim with a record in the 3-meter diving exhibition.
Rice finished third in the WAC Conference last year behind first place team SMU, and Nevada. Rice will be without standout senior Mandy Mularz who led the team and was named 2002 WAC Swimmer of the Year. Mularz was a 2-time All-American and NCAA automatic qualifier in the 50 and 100 freestyle.
The Rams take on the 18-member Owls at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10 at Moby Pool.
In the Spotlight: Melissa Fischer...
Melissa Fischer, a senior from Englewood, Colorado is a Breaststroke and Individual Medley specialist.
Fischer swam in the championship heat of the 400 IM, placing 7th and earning a best time (4:34.42). The acheivement named her to the conference second team. She also raced in the consolation finals of the 100 and 200 breaststroke events where she came in 12th (1:05.66) and 9th (2:19.76) respectively. Fisher?s time in the 200 breaststroke placed her fourth all time in the record books.
Fischer helped the team at conference by earning 26 points and accumulating a total of 174 points throughout the season.
Fischer had top five times for the 2002-2003 season in the 100 and 200 breaststroke, 200 and 400 IM. She was also voted by her teammates as most improved at the BYU and Utah dual meets.
Melissa Fischer transferred from Texas Christian University as a sophomore. Born March 5, 1982, she is the daughter of Chuck and Lynn Fischer.
Mattos named as coach to World Championship Team...
Coach John Mattos was named Assistant Women?s Swimming Coach for the FINA World Swimming Championships (La Federation Internationale De Natation) to be held in Indianapolis, Ind., October 7-11, 2004. FINA is the governing organization for water sports such as swimming. Mattos will be working with Pete Malone, the Head Women?s Swimming Coach and Head Coach of the Kansas City Blazers Swim Team. Alongside Head Coach Malone and Assistant Coach Mattos will also be Gregg Troy.
Mattos? accomplishments include starting his 24th year as head coach at Colorado State. Other coaching positions Mattos was also an assistant for the U.S. World Championship team in 1994 and head coach to the National Junior Elite Training Camp team for Olympic development in 1996. At the Sydney Summer Olympics in 2000, Mattos was personal coach to CSU?s alumni Amy Van Dyken.
This event is scheduled just 6 weeks after the Summer Olympics in Greece. There will be 600 of the world?s best athletes participating.
