University officials today announced an eight-member committee that will lead the search for Colorado State?s new director of athletics.

Al Yates, who is retiring as the school?s president later this summer, made the announcement following a discussion with incoming president Dr. Larry Penley, who is currently the dean of the business school at Arizona State University.

?I believe that the committee we have in place represents a broad spectrum of the University and they understand the role of intercollegiate athletics. They recognize the importance of their mission as a committee in finding the right leader to continue the success of Colorado State athletics,? Yates said.

?We will continue to move expeditiously but thoroughly to conduct a national search for the next athletic director,? Yates said.

Dr. Bob Keller, the school?s NCAA Faculty Athletics Representative and director of the University Honors Program, will chair the committee. Other members include: Jackie Hartman, Chair of the Faculty Council Committee on Intercollegiate Athletics and a professor in CSU?s management department; Blanche Hughes, Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs; Marsha Smeltzer, Associate Athletic Director of Student Support Services; Gary Ozzello, assistant athletic director for media relations; men?s basketball coach Dale Layer; Rulon Stacey, president of the Greater Ram Club and Chief Executive Officer and President of Poudre Valley Health Systems; and Dana Hiatt, CSU?s Director of Equal Opportunity.

Yates said there is no specific timetable in place, but he hopes to have the process at a point that will enable Dr. Penley to appoint an athletic director as early as Sept. 1.

Colorado State is seeking a replacement for Jeffrey Hathaway, named the director of athletics at the University of Connecticut June 10.
