Rams Win Share Of MWC Regular Season Title

The Colorado State swimming and diving team defeated rival UNLV in an intense meet today at Moby Pool, earning a share of the Mountain West Conference Title. The meet started out with the recognition of Colorado State?s seven senior swimmers.
Both teams were tied for second in the conference coming into the meet. UNLV won the first relay and the lead flipped back and forth frequently throughout the meet. In the 200 butterfly, Corinne Hofstetter pulled through the last length to finish four tenths of a second ahead of UNLV.
Another close race was the 200 freestyle. The race was decided at the touch and senior Katie Peck was defeated by UNLV?s Shayna Burns. Their finishing times were Burns, 2:07.19; Peck 2:07.39.
In the 50 freestyle, Liz Jones and Paula Langner finished 1-2, with times of 24.29 and 24.57, respectively. Senior Kristen Schneider took first in the 200 backstroke, with freshman Brette Winegarner coming in right behind her.
CSU was down two points going into the final event, the 400 freestyle relay. The race was very close with a lead change in the 2nd length and a UNLV disqualification on an exchange. The winning moment was in the last 50 yards of the race when Langner, anchoring the relay, came from behind to beat UNLV and seal the win for CSU, 125-118.
All diving events actually took place at the Air Force Academy Invitational on Friday and Saturday. The diver?s points were important to the dual win over UNLV. Lori Vigil won both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving in the dual against UNLV. In the overall invitational, Vigil was second on the 3-meter board, third on the 1-meter, and fifth in platform diving. Kara Crisp placed 13th on the 3-meter and 16th on the 1-meter. Megan Trucco was right behind her placing 17th on the 3-meter and 18th on the 1-meter.
The Colorado State swimming and diving team will resume competition at the MWC Swimming and Diving Championships on Feb. 18-21 in Oklahoma City.
