Men's Golf in Third at Cougar Classic

PROVO, Utah (April 22, 2005) ? The Colorado State men?s golf team finished the first two rounds of the Cougar Classic in third place with a 25-under-par 551, eight strokes behind team-leader Fresno State (543). Senior John Hayes led the Rams after shooting an impressive seven-under 65 in the second round.
CSU had a rough start with a first-round 284, but exploded in the second round with a 267. The Rams are the defending Cougar Classic champs and have won it the past three years.
Hayes fired an eight-under 136 and sits in a tie for 5th place. Junior Kevin McAlpine carded a seven-under 137 and currently resides in a tie for 9th place.
Sophomore Aaron Weston sits in 14th place after firing a two-round 138. While sophomore Derrick Whiting carded a two-under 142 and sits in a tie for 33rd place.
Senior Nate Pettitt rounded out the Rams? scoring with a one-under 143 and a tie for 40th.
Junior Oscar Alvarez and sophomore Nick Becker of BYU each finished the opening two rounds in second place with a 10-under-par 134, four strokes behind the individual leader Mark Modglin (130) of Fresno State.
Colorado State will compete in the third and final round tomorrow morning at the par 72/7001 Riverside Country Club in Provo, Utah. The third round will start at 8:30-10:18 a.m. on the 1st and 10th tees.
