FORT COLLINS, Colo.—The Colorado State swimming and diving team governed the water on Day 1 of the Early Bird Invitational with a current lead over second-place University of Northern Colorado of more than 200 points. The Rams each of the seven women’s events held on Friday, including the 3-meter diving with Nicole Kelley’s score of 259.40. Another notable score was newcomer Samantha Dole, who captured the 50 Freestyle with a time of 24.42.

“We did good. We had a good first day, and a good start to the season,” said Head Coach John Mattos who enters his 29th season at CSU.

Some of the opponents competing in the Early Bird are Metro State College, Colorado School of Mines, Air Force Academy, Mesa State College, University of Northern Colorado, and the University of Colorado.

CSU competed well despite the fact that there were no conference rivals competing in the meet. They are used to having a conference rival such as Wyoming or TCU, who have both competed in the Early Bird in the last few years.

“It’s harder for them to compete against each other because they train against each other. We don’t have Wyoming or TCU here so it doesn’t promote that rivalry,” added Mattos.

The Rams resume action tomorrow at Edora Pool and Ice Center (EPIC) with the final two sessions of the Early Bird Invitational.  The second session begins at 9 a.m., and the final session is set to begin at 2 p.m.

Mattos adds, “We’re solid. We are a good team. I would be concerned if we weren’t dominating like this.”
