FORT COLLINS, Colo.-- The Colorado State University swimming and diving team is looking ahead toward next season and has signed eight new student-athletes to compete in the upcoming season. The 2008-09 class has much to live up to after the 2007-08 season provided a surprise of competitiveness from the soon-to-be sophomores.

Head Coach John Mattos and diving coach Kevin Witt are expecting nothing but progress next season. During last season the coaches were stunned at the potential and success of the freshman class and hope to recapture that fire this season.

"I did not expect them to perform at the levels they performed at," said Mattos. "They are so competitive."

The plethora of Colorado athletes that are currently on the team will welcome fellow state natives Breann Fuller of Brighton, Danielle Gleason and Kim Schemahorn of La Junta, Jordan Quick of Arvada, Frances Mathias of Franktown and Melissa Nolte of Highlands Ranch. Fuller, who is a 200 Backstroke state champion, has much to offer next season.

"She is a true athlete," said Mattos. "I mean that in every sense of the word. She has great athletic presence that will lead to a climb in the conference."

Nolte, a team walk-on, has a historic edge to her decision to swim at Colorado State as Mattos coached Nolte's mother on his first two collegiate teams.

"It's come full circle," said Mattos.

Rounding out the class are Briley Ochs of La Mesa, Calif., Kristen Gropp of Houston, Texas, Kerianne Stuck of Chaska, Minn., and Shayna Solomon of Long Beach, Calif.

"Gleason, Schemahorn, Stuck and Quick bring depth to the team," said Mattos. "They will get experience that should lend themselves future success." The team is also looking to add one more to the recruiting class.
