Rams wrap up three-meet homestand with win

FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- CSU swimming and diving claimed first place in 10 of the first 12 events en route to a resounding dual win over New Mexico State, 158-114, on Saturday at Moby Pool.
The meet wrapped up the Rams' three-meet homestand on a positive note. CSU (8-4, 5-2 Mountain West) now has its most dual wins since the 2003-04 season, when the Rams were 9-2. CSU is now 12-0 all-time against NMSU in duals.
"I was a little surprised that we came out pretty fired up and strong," Head Coach John Mattos said. "By all means they should have been tired, but I'm happy to see this because it brings them confidence and they know that they can still come out when they're tired."
The Rams trailed 20-18 after two events, when the Aggies took first through third place in the 100 Breaststroke. CSU reclaimed the lead after sweeping the third event, the 100 Butterfly, and held the lead for the remainder of the meet.
The Rams placed first in eight of their next nine events. NMSU diver Mariesa Cloud claimed first place in the 3-meter diving competition, edging CSU junior Nicole Kelley by only two tenths of a point.
CSU junior Nora Kennedy helped to boost the team's score when she placed first in the 100 Butterfly, the 200 Butterfly and the 500 Freestyle.
"Nora Kennedy coming right off of the 200 Butterfly win and then, with only a couple of events in between, coming back to win the 500 Freestyle was huge," Mattos said.
The meet marked the end of a grueling three-meet weekend, which included a win against Utah on Thursday at Moby Pool and a loss to a strong BYU team on Friday.
The Rams' next meet will be on Jan. 30 at Denver, at 5 p.m. MST. The team's next scheduled home meet is Feb. 6 vs. Wyoming.
