FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- The Rams head into a difficult weekend as they travel to Denver University (5-4-1) on Friday to compete against the Pioneers in a 13-event format dual at 5 p.m. CSU divers will wrap up the weekend with a trip to the Air Force Academy Diving Invite at USAFA on Saturday.
The Rams (8-4, 5-2) head into the weekend in third place in the Mountain West Conference.
CSU divers will face conference rivals Wyoming, BYU, New Mexico and Air Force at the diving invite. BYU is the only undefeated team in conference matchups and currently sits in first place. The Rams last faced BYU at home on Jan. 16, losing to the Cougars 149.5-93.5. CSU divers took second in the 1-meter diving competition in the dual and third in the 3-meter competition.
Quoting Head Coach John Mattos...
On competing with the Denver Pioneers:
"If we go into the meet thinking we're going to win we might fall flat. Last year I thought DU had an excellent team, and I fully felt we probably weren't going to be able to beat them, but we handled them very nicely. You just never know."
On what he'd like to accomplish at the meet: "The kids have been so consistent all season long that my expectations for all the girls that have been doing the job remains the same. I anticipate that they're going to be right on it. I think that they're going to be very competitive, and I feel that they're going to want to go in there and get the job done. Getting our hand on the wall first is the most important thing, not what our times are."
On the Air Force Academy Diving Invite: "It is important for the divers to get into an invitational-type situation, which will be similar to what they'll be doing at the conference championships. They will be doing a preliminary round and a final, which means they will have to do their dives twice if they make it into the final. All of the girls need to have that experience so they're not just going into conference unprepared. I'm hoping that they will be strong on Saturday. The meets this week and next week are going to help determine what athletes are able to go to the conference championships."
Meet structure... The meet at DU begins at 5 p.m. MST on Friday and will be held in a 13-event format. CSU diving will compete on Friday and Saturday at the Air Force Diving Invite at USAFA. The diving invite will consist of both a preliminary and final round, similar to what CSU will see at the Mountain West Conference championships.
Last meet... The Rams are coming off of a three-meet homestand Jan. 15-17, which included wins against New Mexico State (158-114) and Utah (156-144), and a loss to a difficult BYU team (149.5-93.5). The grueling weekend put CSU in third place in the Mountain West Conference, just behind BYU, who is currently undefeated on the season.
MWC standings... The Rams' loss to BYU on Jan. 16 leaves CSU (5-2) in third place in the Mountain West Conference standings. BYU (7-0) leads the conference in first place as the only undefeated team in conference meets. Utah (5-1-1) is just ahead of CSU in second place, despite having lost to the Rams at Moby Pool on Jan. 15. UNLV (4-3), TCU (4-3-1), Wyoming (2-3), San Diego State (2-5), New Mexico (1-6) and Air Force (0-7) round out the standings.
