FORT COLLINS, Colo - In its home opener, which was also its first conference meet, the Colorado State swimming and diving team overpowered TCU in a 173-124 win at Moby Pool on Thursday.
"When you win convincingly, you know you did some good things," said Head Coach John Mattos. "They held their own and came out on top."
Entering the competition, Mattos was looking for the Rams to gain points by finishing races first and second. The Rams did just as hoped; they entered the 12th event clinching the top spot in all events except three and exceeded Mattos' goal by finishing first, second and third in five of those 12 events.
Kathleen McCleary contributed two of the first-place finishes, as she pulled ahead of the competition in the 1,000 and 500 Freestyles, with times of 10 minutes, 30.09 seconds and 5:08.71, respectively. McCleary's times were the solid performances of the night, according to Mattos.
CSU's conference schedule continues Saturday as the Rams travel to Colorado Springs, Colo., to face the Air Force Academy, the host team, New Mexico and San Diego State.
"We will see how we race," said Mattos. "They are going to come at us and I know they are going to have some good tools to do it with."
The athletes take the blocks of the Air Force Academy Natatorium at 1 p.m.
