SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The Colorado State swimming and diving team defeated Utah, 153-147, in a fight that came down to the final event and senior leadership Saturday at the Ute Natatorium.
“It was a very close meet with a lot of battles,” said Head Coach John Mattos. “Utah swam smart.”
During all competitions a team must have its leader who inspires, motivates and excels. In their victory over the Utes, the Rams’ Jennifer Muniz became that leader.
“Muniz really stepped up tonight and showed her medal as a senior, as a leader and as a quality young woman,” said Mattos, whose Rams improved to 6-1 overall and 5-1 in the Mountain West.
While cheering and motivating her team outside the pool, Muniz did her share of harm in the water while swimming three individual events and one relay. Muniz secured a first-place finish in the 100 Fly with a time of 57.58 seconds. She also gathered second-place honors in the 200 Fly and 200 IM.
Mattos described Muniz’s performance as a positive statement, evidence that she is ready to do some damage this year.
In conclusion after the hard-fought battle, Mattos and the Rams feel fortunate to have pulled out a win against a Utah team (6-3, 3-1 MWC) that never gave up and defended its home facility.
“I tip my hat off to Utah, Coach Winslow and his crew,” said Mattos. “They made it real close and almost pulled it out.”
CSU hopes to do more damage Friday at 5 p.m. when DU, who defeated Utah in Denver back on Oct. 24, travels to Moby Pool. Admission is free and fans are encouraged to attend.
