LARAMIE, Wyo. - After being tied 2-2 over the past four years, the Wyoming Cowgirls (13-1, 6-1 MWC) broke the Border War stand-off when they defeated Colorado State (8-2, 6-2), 162-138, Thursday night at Corbett Pool on the campus of the University of Wyoming.
In a well fought battle between the two rival teams, the Cowgirls had just enough power to outlast the Rams.
"I'm certainly not disappointed in the way the athletes performed," said Head Coach John Mattos on the completion of the Border War.
During the 16-event competition, four CSU athletes placed first in six of the events. Breann Fuller and Jennifer Muniz picked up two individual wins each, while Kathleen McCleary and Arianne Lujan each pulled away with one first-place honor.
Fuller dominated, as she has done all season long, in the 100 and 200 Backstroke events with times of 56.70 seconds and 2:05.40, respectively. The Rams' second double-win came at the hands of Muniz during the 100 and 200 Fly events. Muniz recorded a time of 2:08.15 in the 200 Fly and tied her season-high time of 56.70 seconds in the 100 Fly.
McCleary picked up another "W" in the 1,000 Freestyle event with a time of 10:32.99, while Lujan brought in the last Rams' final win of the night in the 200 IM, reporting a time of 2:08.99.
"I think this is an honest-to-goodness rivalry," said Mattos. "It is healthy and it is performance-oriented now."
Colorado State takes this loss and looks to the future, which brings a two-week training session. After the two-week session the Rams will join the other eight Mountain West swimming and diving teams for the Mountain West Conference championships on Feb. 24 in Oklahoma City, Okla., at Oklahoma City Community College.
