COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- The Mountain West announced Tuesday that it had named CSU sophomore thrower Aaliyah Pete its Women's Field Athlete of the Week after she tossed a conference-leading 52 feet, 5.25 inches in the shot put at Saturday's Fum McGraw Quadrangular.
Competing outdoors for the first time in 2015, Pete won the women's shot put at Saturday's meet by over six feet as part of the dominant performance by the CSU women's team. The team swept its dual meet pairings against Colorado, Northern Colorado, and Wyoming.
Pete's mark ranks first in the Mountain West for the women's shot put by nearly an entire foot, and leads all other Mountain West sophomores by over six feet. She is now ranked 10th in the NCAA for the women's shot put and is second among all Division I sophomores in the nation.
In addition to her performance in the shot put, Pete also placed sixth in the discus throw at the Fum McGraw Quadrangular, throwing 134-6.
The weekly accolade is the second collected by Pete in her collegiate career. She was named the MW Women's Indoor Field Athlete of the Week on Jan. 27.
A contingent of Colorado State athletes will head to Palo Alto, Calif., for the Stanford Invitational on Friday and Saturday, while the Rams will also compete at the Tom Benich Invitational in Greeley, Colo., on Saturday.
