LAWRENCE, Kan. -- With inclement weather anticipated for Saturday at Rock Chalk Park, the site of the 2015 Kansas Relays, the CSU track & field team was forced to adapt to a revised schedule that moved all of Saturday's events to Friday. The Rams not only adapted, but took the change in stride as they performed admirably at one of the nation's most prestigious collegiate meets.
The 88th Kansas Relays began Wednesday with the multi-event competition, which continued Thursday. Josh Cogdill provided the story of the multi-event portion for the Rams, taking the victory in the men's decathlon with a total of 6,883 points. Cogdill defeated Kansas State's Adam Deterding by 88 points for the win. CSU sophomore walk-on Hunter Price took third in the decathlon with a total of 6,767 points, while senior Justin Green took sixth at 6,451 points.
CSU junior Jessica Green placed third in the women's heptathlon, totaling 4,956 points for third place. Fellow Rams Monica Franco and Lindsey Kroboth finished back-to-back in seventh place and eighth place.
Due to the drastic change in the event schedule, many CSU athletes competed in multiple events Friday without much rest in between. Lorenda Holston did so with ease, taking third in the women's 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.05 seconds and fourth in the women's 100-meter dash with a personal record time of 11.74. Her time in the 100-meter dash was the fifth-best personal record in CSU outdoor history.
Leah Fair also competed in the 100-meter dash, placing sixth with a personal record time of 11.82. Fair's personal best is the sixth-best in CSU outdoor history. Freshman Lettia Wilson also competed, taking 13th with a time of 12.14. Fair also competed extremely well in the women's 200-meter dash, taking third place in the field of 24 competitors with a time of 24.02.
On the men's side of the 100-meter dash, Josh DeLoach placed ninth out of 44 athletes with a time of 10.68. In the 200-meter dash, Troy Johnson took 19th with a time of 22.03 while DeLoach finished 24th with a time of 22.14.
The CSU women had a strong showing in the 400-meter hurdles as Stephanie Gerber led the way with a sixth-place finish and time of 1:01.39. Mariah Witt took eighth with a time of 1:02.17, while freshman Katie Werman placed 10th at 1:03.66, making it three Rams in the top 10 of the 36-athlete field.
On the men's side of the 400-meter hurdles, Sam Little placed ninth with a time of 54.71. Little also took 12th in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.69.
Zane Vanderberg continued his consistent freshman campaign, taking 10th in the men's 400-meter dash with a time of 48.87. Senior Zach Browning was close behind, taking 13th with a time of 49.08. Freshman Nick Olson placed 18th with a time of 49.91.
On the women's side of the 400-meter dash, Abby Simpson placed 11th with a time of 56.66 while Kendall Horan finished 16th at 57.86.
While most of the Colorado State distance runners headed to California for the weekend, a few traveled with the rest of the team to compete in Lawrence. Freshman Dominique Ward finished fourth in the women's 1,500-meter run at Rock Chalk Park, clocking in at 4:37.02. Sophomore Josephine Bush took sixth, finishing in 4:42.41. On the men's side of the event, junior Chris Ganem and freshman Nick Korhumel essentially crossed the finish line together. Ganem placed fourth at 3:58.58, while Korhumel was fifth at 3:58.82.
Ward and Bush were two more athletes that had very little time between events, as they competed in the 800-meter run not long after the conclusion of the 1,500. Bush finished in 2:21.27, while Ward clocked in at 2:22.18. Freshman Kate White was CSU's top finisher in the event, taking 10th at 2:16.75.
In the field events, Kiah Hicks had yet another impressive meet, taking second place in the women's discus throw. Hicks threw a season-best 176-9, while Aaliyah Pete took ninth with a toss of 148-9. Hicks also took third in the women's hammer throw with a mark of 198-4. Monet Jackson nearly eclipsed her personal record, taking fourth at 192-7. Freshman Aimee Larrabee competed well in addition, taking seventh while throwing 170-3.
Pete showed why shot put is her specialty with a monster 54-2 toss, taking second in the women's competition. Hicks placed fifth, throwing 47-0.75.
JT Van Veen again proved reliable in the men's discus throw, taking fourth place while tying his personal record throw of 177-11. Jake Schneeberger placed eighth, throwing 162-10. Tyler Schultz placed 15th with a throw of 155-5, while Daniel Weirich took 23rd at 144-11. Freshman Alex Blaho finished two spots behind Weirich with a throw of 141-3.
Schultz came up strong in the men's hammer throw, launching a toss of 200-2 for second place. Schneeberger was right behind him, taking third at 199-1. Sophomore Jake Newell continued to improve, throwing 183-3 for fifth place.
Three men's throwers finished back-to-back-to-back in the men's shot put, with Tyler Schultz leading the way in fourth place at 55-5.75. Daniel Weirich followed at 54-10.75, while Jake Scheeberger placed sixth at 53-8.25.
Hunter Price, who finished third in the men's decathlon Thursday, also competed in the men's long jump Friday. Price placed fourth, jumping 23-4.25. Fellow sophomore Josh Sandin took seventh, leaping 22-5.25, while senior Jonathan Edmunds took eighth with the same mark as Sandin.
Edmunds competed in the men's triple jump, taking fourth with a leap of 49-7.25. Trey Richardson placed sixth, posting a mark of 48-8.25. Collin Scheer placed 10th, leaping 47-9.25.
Jessica Green, who finished third in the women's heptathlon, competed in the women's long jump as well. She jumped 18-0.25 to finish fifth, while fellow multi-event athlete Lindsey Kroboth placed sixth at 17-6.75.
Jazmyn Webster finished second in the women's high jump, posting a mark of 5-10.75. Jessi Macedo and Isobel Brown tied for sixth at 5-7, while McKenzie Wright finished tied for eighth at 5-5.
In the women's pole vault, freshman Morgan Moore tied for eighth with a mark of 11-11.75. Multi-event specialist Justin Green participated in the men's pole vault, taking fourth with a mark of 16-3.25.
Despite the adversity the team faced in Lawrence, head coach Brian Bedard was satisfied with his squad. "It was pretty tough on our team, rolling in at 1:00 a.m. and competing from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.," he said. "The team has rallied with some gutsy performances today."
A portion of the Kansas Relays was a quadrangular competition between four teams, featuring Colorado State, Kansas State, Purdue, and host Kansas. While the Rams hung around on both the men's and women's sides of the coin, the lack of distance athletes in Lawrence made it difficult to contend for overall team victories.
Most of the distance squad traveled to California for the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays, as well as the Bryan Clay Invitational at Azusa Pacific University.
At Azusa, freshman Macy Kreutz showed incredible poise by finishing seventh out of 114 athletes in the women's 800-meter run. Kreutz completed the race in 2:10.91. Just as impressive was Laura Yarrow's fifth-place finish out of 61 competitors in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase. Yarrow clocked in at 10:43.38, crushing her personal record. In the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase, Joe Marchand placed 14th in a field of 51 athletes with a time of 9:20.90.
Most of the events at Mt. SAC and Azusa had not been completed at the time of this release. The Kansas Relays also had not finished due to the changes in the event schedule. Follow @CSURAMSTRACK on Twitter for updates on the remaining events at each meet.
