National Strength & Conditioning Award Winners

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Three Colorado State student-athletes were honored this spring by the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) and EAS Sports Nutrition, which distinguishes student-athletes from around the country for their athletic accomplishments and dedication to strength and conditioning. Men's basketball's Daniel Bejarano, softball's Haley David and track & field's Jake Schneeberger were each recipients of the 2015 All-American Athlete Award.

The program recognizes collegiate athletes whose athletic accomplishments, in the opinion of their strength coaches, reflect their dedication to strength training and conditioning. Bejarano was nominated by Head Strength & Conditioning Coach Jason Phillips. Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach Nick Longo nominated David and Schneeberger.

Bejarano was a two-time All-Mountain West selection, also being tabbed as the league's Sixth Man of the Year as a sophomore in 2013. Despite playing just three seasons in a Rams uniform, he became the third CSU player to ever score 1,000 career points, pull down 600 rebounds and dish out 200 assists. As a senior in 2014-15, he ranked among the MW leaders with 11.0 points per game (20th), 7.4 rebounds per game (sixth), 2.0 three-pointers per game (ninth) and 5.9 defensive rebounds per game (fourth). During his CSU tenure, the Rams went to three postseason tournaments, spent parts of two seasons in both top-25 polls and set a school record with 27 wins in 2014-15.

"Daniel changed not only his body, but his game over the span of his career at Colorado State," Phillips said. "He established himself as a leader on and off the court through his dedication to preparation. Daniel's commitment to training and his work ethic have helped establish a culture of toughness, effort and persistence in our basketball program. Not only does he `embrace the grind', but he holds his teammates accountable and has raised the bar in terms of training and physical preparation for Colorado State men's basketball."

David concluded her softball career with a batting average above .300, earning 90 hits, 73 runs scored and 26 stolen bases in 28 attempts. While she was a consistent contributor throughout her career -- playing in 173 games -- she elevated her game in 2015, starting 55 of 56 contests for the Rams. She led the team with 14 stolen bases and ranked second for hits (59), batting average (.312) and runs scored (29). The Erie, Colo., native is a three-time Mountain West Academic All-Conference selection, and helped the Rams to 112 career wins and three winning seasons after CSU went 8-43 the year before she arrived.

"If I asked Haley to dig a six-foot-by-six-foot hole in the ground with a spoon because it would make her quicker, faster or stronger, she would do it -- and without thinking twice," Longo said. "She is the glue that holds a team together. She leads by example and always does what's right. She excels on the field and in the classroom, not just in the weight room. HD is going to take her strong will and flawless work ethic into the next phase of her life. She is truly one of a kind, and I am a better coach because of student-athletes such as herself."

Schneeberger concluded his career as a three-time NCAA qualifier and five-time all-conference award winner in the shot put, weight throw and hammer events. After helping guide the Rams to their first Mountain West outdoor title, the Fort Collins native enters the NCAA West Preliminary Round ranked 27th in the country in the hammer throw, breaking the 200-foot mark at last week's conference championship meet. Schneeberger posted a successful indoor campaign as well, highlighted by his first career league title in the shot put, registering a personal-record toss of 58-5.25. He was a two-time Mountain West Athlete of the Week and three-time MW Academic All-Conference recipient.

"Jake is the definition of hard work," Longo said. "He is selfless and dedicated, and he is willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done, and get it done right the first time around. Jake has got it done in the classroom and on the field, not only in the weight room. He has developed into a mentor and coach for some of the younger athletes, and holds teammates accountable. He is truly interested in their improvement and the development of the program. Jake embodies what it is to be a CSU Ram."

All three student-athletes received their degrees earlier this month, with Bejarano earning a degree in liberal arts, David is health & exercise science and Schneeberger in landscape architecture.
