SAN DIEGO – The Colorado State swimming & diving squad opened the USD Shootout with a win in the 400 medley relay, and wound up placing third at the event hosted by the University of San Diego on Saturday.
The foursome of Rowan Hauber, Jenna Beaury, Tonicia Thomas and Katie Kicklighter gave the Rams 11 points in the first event, winning by just over a 0.5 seconds over the top relay group from Kansas.
The win was the only one of the day for the Rams. The meet featured many short-distance events and only allowed for one individual to score from each team in every individual event, creating a unique format for the Rams.
“We enjoyed the opportunity to race a different format, but I don’t think it truly showcased our strengths, namely our endurance and depth,” CSU head coach Christopher Woodard said. “But all the teams were on equal footing and we failed to capitalize on some opportunities.
“Hopefully we are able to take some lessons from this meet into our training and our remaining dual meets.”
Thomas earned a runner-up result in the 50 backstroke, finishing .13 seconds off the pace in 26.58.
CSU’s 400 free relay group (Karin Roh, Teagan Griffith, Hauber, Kicklighter) scored two points by placing third in the final event of the day.
The Rams will host Mountain West rival Wyoming for a dual meet on Saturday, Jan. 21 at Moby Pool. The meet will begin at 12 p.m. and will be preceded with a ceremony honoring CSU’s 10 senior swimmers and divers. Admission is free.
