Sophomore from Colorado Springs looks to build upon strong season-opening swim

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – No one doubted that Marie Goodwyn could become a force in the pool for Colorado State University.

Winning three events at a four-team meet in her first event of her sophomore season? Such success so quickly was certainly a bonus for a team entering the 2017-18 with high expectations.

Goodwyn helped lead the Rams to a winning weekend at the season-opening Intermounain Shootout in Grand Junction, Colo. CSU defeated BYU, Colorado Mesa and Air Force, with Goodwyn winning both the 200 and 400 IM events, along with the 200 butterfly.

The Colorado Springs native posted times that not only won events at the Intermountain Shootout, but also ranked highly in the NCAA. Following the meet, her altitude-adjusted 400 IM time (4:24.40) and 200 IM mark (59.58) ranked 16th and 22nd nationally, respectively.

CSU head coach Christopher Woodard said that Goodwyn, who has a reputation for being incredibly humble, responded well to her national ranking.

"When I told Marie [her ranking], she was genuinely surprised," Woodard said. "That next day after I told her, she stayed an extra 10 minutes after practice to work on some technical issues."

Goodwyn credits her teammates and coaches for helping push her to the level that she's competing at curretntly, especially her training partner (and roommate), fellow sophomore Andrea Basile. Goodwyn also notes the significant drive of the team as a factor for the squad's early success this season.

"We have a lot more energy than last year," Goodwyn said. "Part of that is because we ended last year so well. There's even a greater hope for the end of the season, along with the meets in between. We've taken a little bit of a different approach to training, and I think that has helped us mentally. The freshman class is extremely positive and brings a whole new light to the team."

CSU finished fifth at the Mountain West Conference Championship last season, the program's best finish since 2009. Goodwyn's early wins, along with those of her teammates and the team, are pushing the Rams to want even more.

"I think within our sport and our team, each success sets a new standard," Goodwyn explained. "Woody talking about where I'm ranked; it's just a reminder every day that I'm committed and to just maintain the level of effort and work."

There is no doubt that Goodwyn has put in the work – both in and out of the pool. When Woodard recruited Goodwyn, he expected her to blossom into a conference finalist very quickly. Although her high national rankings may have been a little more unexpected this quickly in her career, Woodard knows that she's focused on improving so she can produce more points for her team.

"She might be surprised by it, but she also wants it, so she's willing to work even harder," Woodard said. "We are happy with where she's at and where she looks like she's going."
