Jerrell Mock, Grant Fischer and Cole Rockhold each earn All-Region honors

LOGAN, Utah - The Colorado State cross country team placed fourth in the men's 10k and seventh in the women's 6k on Friday at the NCAA Mountain Regional from the Steve and Dona Reeder Cross Country Course.

Between its fourth-place finish on Friday and its performances throughout the 2017 season, the CSU men's team has made a strong case to receive an at-large bid to the 2017 NCAA Cross Country Championships. Should the men reach the national meet, which is held on Nov. 18 from Louisville, Ky., it would mark the fourth time in the past five seasons that they have advanced that far in sixth-year head coach Art Siemers' tenure.

Each of Jerrell Mock, Grant Fischer and Cole Rockhold were named USTFCCCA All-Region for their performances. As a team, Colorado State's men placed only behind top-ranked Northern Arizona, No. 2 BYU, No. 5 Colorado, and ahead of No. 12 Southern Utah, No. 16 Air Force and No. 23 Utah State, among others. The Rams' women defeated No. 29 Northern Arizona, and finished behind only ranked teams or teams receiving votes.

Colorado State was led on the men's side by Mock, who placed sixth overall with a 10k time of 30:19.9. Fischer joined him in the top 10 with a time of 30:38.4, while Rockhold clocked a time of 30:42.5 to join each in the top 15. Trent Powell (31:15.7) placed 34th, while Eric Hamer rounded out CSU scorers with a 39th-place finish.

The Rams' women were paced by Darby Gilfillan, who placed 29th with a time of 20:59.1. Two more Rams finished within 10 spots of her, as Ali Kallner (21:05.5) placed 35th and Macy Kreutz (21:07.3) finished in 38th. Dominique Ward (21:17.9) was the next Ram to cross the finish line, placing 45th, and McKenna Spillar (21:19.5) took 47th to round out CSU scorers.

IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State cross country head coach Art Siemers
"Our men ran really well today. We trained really hard last week, which you typically wouldn't do heading into the regional – but we were very confident that our region would take care of business and send seven teams to NCAAs. We were a little more tired today, but I think it'll really help us prepare for the NCAA Championships. We finished where we were supposed to today and I think we have a lot more in the tank in eight days."

On Grant Fischer:
"A big thing for us today was the performance of Grant (Fischer). He's a two-time All-American in track and had a bit of a late start to this season but we really feel like he's clicking now. His top-10 performance in this really tough region shows that he's capable of big things in eight days. That gives us another piece of the puzzle to try to put together a big NCAA Championships."

On the women's team
"The women ran the best that they've run all year. We beat Northern Arizona today, who is ranked No. 29 in the country. It probably won't be good enough to reach the NCAA Championships, but it's a nice way for them to cap off the season. I felt like we ran to our potential and it's a good marker for us heading to track season, where we hope win more conference championships."

NOTES
- Jerrell Mock has now been named All-Region in all four of his collegiate cross country seasons.
