CSU one nine teams competing at Houston
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Colorado State Rams will head to Houston to compete in the Phill Hansel Invitational, hosted by the University of Houston. The three-day event begins Thursday at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Natatorium.
CSU will be joined by the hosts, Houston, along with a pair of familiar Mountain West foes – Air Force and New Mexico. Also participating at the event will be Idaho, North Texas, Northern Colorado, Rice, Tulane and Vanderbilt.
The meet is CSU's final event of the fall portion of its 2017-18 campaign. CSU is 2-3 on the season, including sweeping BYU and Colorado Mesa at the Intermountain Shootout to begin the year.
The Rams have competed at the Phill Hansel Invite each of the last three seasons. The event is one of the team's favorites to compete at.
"We really enjoy the host, the venue, and we think the teams are very competitive and comparable to what we have," Head Coach Christopher Woodard said. "I expect each team will be bringing their midseason best."
The Phill Hansel Invite will be CSU's first multi-team event with both preliminary and finals heats. The goal is that the team will learn and adapt to this format, providing a similar experience as to what they will see in February at the MW Championships.
"It's usually a good eye-opener for our freshmen," Woodard explained. "We haven't competed in this format yet this year. Our upperclassmen are used to it, but in a situation like this even they are tossed around into events or relays they wouldn't normally be in. My hope is they can eventually be focused on their events and their relays, and it will become easier."
CSU has been paced by sophomore Marie Goodwyn (undefeated in both the 100 and 200 Butterfly), freshman Maddie Ward (five wins across both the 100 and 200 Breaststroke), senior Rowan Hauber (seven total individual wins) and junior Tonicia Thomas (top marks in backstroke events).
Meet Schedule:
CSU DIVERS HEADED TO NORTHERN ARIZONA
The CSU diving squad will head to Flagstaff, Ariz., while the swimmers are in Houston. The team will compete at the Lumberjack Diving Invitational, which runs Thursday-Saturday.
Freshmen Rachel Holland and Arizona-native Skylar Williams will represent CSU at the event.
"NAU will be a good test for our freshmen," diving coach Chelsea Popplewell said. "It's their first big invite and against some really good competition, so I'm excited to see them step up. We get to go up against some conference teams in Flagstaff and it'll be a good indicator of not only where we're at, but ore importantly what we need to do to be competitive come February."
