Darby Gilfillan and Trent Powell each earn their first career weekly conference honors in cross country
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Colorado State's Darby Gilfillan and Trent Powell have been named the respective women's and men's Mountain West Cross Country Athletes of the Week. The conference announced its first weekly conference honors for cross country on Tuesday.
Â
Tuesday's accolades are the first weekly conference honors for each of Gilfillan and Powell. It marks the first time that any Mountain West school has swept the weekly women's and men's conference cross country honors since 2014 (Wyoming's Holly Page and Amos Bowen), and the first time that Colorado State has since 2012 (Kaitlin Hanenburg and Alex Muntefering).
Â
Gilfillan was the top collegian in the CSU Duals women's 5k, finishing in 17:35. Only two other collegiate entries finished within two seconds of Gilfillan (17:37 – Colorado's Brianna Schwartz and Madie Boreman). The next closest collegian, Jaci Smith of Air Force, placed 23 seconds back (17:58).
Â
The senior from Denver, Colo., led the Rams' women to a second-place finish, only one point back of preseason No. 1 Colorado (35-56) and well ahead of preseason No. 29 Air Force (36-58). Among the runners defeated by Gilfillan on Friday were track & field NCAA champions Sage Hurta and Dani Jones, as well as All-Americans Boreman and Makena Morley.
Â
Powell also defeated every runner from Air Force (receiving votes in men's poll), as well all but one runner from men's preseason No. 5 Colorado. The junior placed second of 120 runners (including unattached entries), clocking a time of 14:52 to improve upon his previous best cross country 5k by 25 seconds. CU All-Americans Joe Klecker and Zach Perrin were among the runners that Powell finished ahead of at the CSU Duals on Friday.
Â
The Colorado State cross country team returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 23 for the Roy Griak Invitational. The prestigious meet is hosted by the University of Minnesota, and is held from the Les Bolstad Golf Course in Falcon Heights, Minn.
