Junior helped lead Rams to 5-0 week

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Junior Tonicia Thomas has been named the Mountain West Swimmer of the Week, the league office announced today.

Thomas won four individual events and helped propel two relay squads to wins on the week, as the Rams went 5-0 across three events.

The Las Vegas native began the week with a pair of individual victories and a relay win in San Diego, where she helped push the Rams to three wins over MW foes. Thomas won the 100 and 200 backstroke events and joined Rowan Hauber, Marie Goodwyn and Maddie Ward in winning the 200 medley relay as CSU defeated San Diego State, New Mexico and Fresno State.

Thomas played a key role in CSU's dual win over Northern Arizona on Friday. With the meet tied 80-80 with four events to go, Thomas won the 100 backstroke in dominating fashion to put the Rams ahead. CSU would win the next two events as well to seal the victory over the defending WAC champions.

The Rams capped off the week on Saturday with a dual at Northern Colorado, where Thomas won the 200 backstroke and joined the same medley relay crew for a win in the 400-meter event.

Overall, Thomas was undefeated in individual backstroke events for the week. The communications studies major already holds NCAA B standard qualifying marks in both the 100 and 200 backstroke.

Thomas is the second Ram to win MW Swimmer of the Week honors this season. Goodwyn earned the recognition on Nov. 7 following a standout dual against Houston.

CSU's final dual meet of the season will be against Air Force at Moby Pool on Jan. 26 at 4 p.m. MT.
