Rams placed in top 13 for 12 consecutive regular-season rankings
NEW ORLEANS -- The Colorado State men's track & field team places 13th in this week's U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association (USTFCCCA) NCAA Division I Men's Indoor Track & Field National Team Rankings. The organization's week two rankings were released on Monday.
Colorado State places in the USTFCCCA's top 25 for the 12th consecutive regular season rankings, dating back to the beginning of the 2016-17 indoor season. CSU has been ranked no lower than at No. 13 in any of those rankings, highlighted by a No. 6 ranking this preseason, its highest all-time in either indoor or outdoor track & field. Colorado State earned 58.54 points in the computer rankings this week.
The USTFCCCA's computer rankings assign points totals to individual student-athletes based upon how that athlete's marks and times stack up this season as well as how they rank based upon historical data. Those points totals for those individual student-athletes are tallied to reach the respective team's points total for that week's rankings. Current season bests as well as previous career bests are considered at this point in the season. The purpose of the computer rankings is to project how a team could finish at the NCAA Championships.
Senior Mostafa Hassan, who made his 2017-18 indoor debut this past weekend, remains the leading contributor to the Rams' points total (22.30 points of CSU's 58.54). Hassan, a four-time First-Team All-American in the shot put and CSU's first NCAA champion in any sport since 2005, opened this season with a mark of 64-2 (19.55m), the nation's No. 7 mark and world's No. 28 mark. Hassan finished with a best mark of 69-10.75 (21.30m) last season, which ranks as the best in Mountain West history, CSU history, 10th in NCAA history and No. 4 in the world that season.
Distance athletes Grant Fischer and Cole Rockhold also play major factors in the Rams' ranking despite no competition thus far this indoor season. Fischer, a senior and two-time All-American, ranks second in program history in the indoor 5,000 meters and finished ninth in the event at the NCAA Indoor Championships last season. Rockhold, who was a cross country All-American this past season, earned First-Team All-America honors in the 3,000 meters last year with a sixth-place NCAA finish. Rockhold ranked 99th in the world in the 3,000 meters last season.
Combined events athletes Hunter Price and Nick Kravec round out the top contributors to CSU's team points total. Price earned First-Team All-America honors in the heptathlon last year with a No. 4 NCAA finish, which is the highest by any heptathlete in Mountain West history, behind a MW-record and CSU-record 5,996 points. Kravec opened the 2017-18 indoor season with a score of 5,507 (5,548 when converted for track size) at the Mines Alumni Classic & Multi, placing him fifth in program history. Kravec earned the first Mountain West Indoor Track & Field Men's Field Athlete of the Week honor of the current season following that performance.
The Colorado State track & field team returns to action this week at the CU Open in Boulder, Colo. The three-day meet is slated to span Thursday through Saturday from the CU Indoor Practice Facility and the Balch Fieldhouse.
