Rams ranked each week this indoor season, and for 13 consecutive regular-season computer rankings overall
NEW ORLEANS -- The Colorado State men's track & field team checks in at No. 25 in this week's U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association (USTFCCCA) NCAA Division I Men's Indoor Track & Field National Team Rankings. The organization's week four rankings were released on Monday.
Colorado State's men have placed in each regular-season computer ranking this season, and have found themselves in the USTFCCCA top 25 for 13 consecutive weeks during the regular season dating back to the beginning of the 2016-17 indoor season. Highlighting that stretch was a No. 6 ranking this preseason, its highest all-time in either indoor or outdoor track & field. Colorado State earned 38.25 points in the computer rankings this week to place as the only ranked men's team in the Mountain West and the only ranked men's team from the state of Colorado.
Beginning with this week, only current season bests – with the exception of the combined events - are factored into the USTFCCCA's computer rankings, which assign points totals to individual student-athletes based upon the quality of those athletes' marks and times. Those marks or times are stacked up to others from this season, and are also measured based upon how they rank compared to historical data. Those points totals for those individual student-athletes are tallied to reach the respective team's points total for that week's rankings. The purpose of the computer rankings is to project how a team could finish at the NCAA Championships.
CSU's leading points contributor is Cole Rockhold, who broke the program record in the 3,000 meters with a time of 7:50.10 at the Husky Classic. Rockhold, a three-time All-American (one honorable mention), currently ranks as the top Mountain West athlete in the event and the No. 7-ranked NCAA athlete in the 3,000. Furthermore, the native of Independence, Mo., ranks 40th in the world in the 3,000 and 13th among all American-born athletes. Also factored into the CSU's ranking is Rockhold's top mile time (4:04.07/3:58.12 with altitude conversion), which ranks 18th in the NCAA and 91st among all American-born athletes.
Fellow distance standout Grant Fischer also plays a major factor in the Rams' current ranking, as he places 13th in the NCAA after breaking CSU's 5,000 meters record with a time of 13:44.24 at the Husky Classic. In addition to his notable NCAA ranking, the two-time All-American currently ranks 16th in the world in the 5,000 meters and seventh among all American-born athletes.
Senior Mostafa Hassan continues to be a top contributor to the Rams' points total, as he currently ranks eighth in the NCAA and by far the No. 1 shot putter in the Mountain West with a mark of 63-4.25 (19.59m) at the Don Kirby Invitational. The four-time All-American and 2017 indoor shot put national champion currently ranks 41st in the world this indoor season and No. 1 among all Egyptian-born shot putters.
The final current season best factored into the Rams' ranking this week is Nick Kravec's 5,507 points (5,548 points with track size conversion) in the heptathlon at the Mines Alumni Classic & Multi. The Fort Collins, Colo., native's rankings include No. 1 in the Mountain West, No. 20 in the NCAA, No. 21 among all Americans and No. 69 in the world.
Preseason data from combined events still factor into rankings at this point of the season, and heptathlete Hunter Price remains a contributor to CSU's team points total despite no action thus far this indoor season. Price earned First-Team All-America honors in the heptathlon last season with a No. 4 NCAA finish, the highest by any heptathlete in Mountain West history. The native of Arvada, Colo., tallied a MW-record and CSU-record 5,996 points at last year's NCAA Indoor Championships, ranking him as the No. 2 American-born heptathlete and No. 9 heptathlete in the world in 2016-17.
The Colorado State track & field team will compete in its final tune-up prior to this year's conference meet when the Rams travel for the Rocky Mountain Classic on Friday in Laramie, Wyo.
