Rams head to this weekend’s NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships ranked at No. 23

NEW ORLEANS -- The Colorado State men's track & field team will head to the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships with a No. 23 ranking in this season's final U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association (USTFCCCA) NCAA Division I Men's Indoor Track & Field National Team Rankings. The organization's week seven rankings were released on Sunday.

Colorado State's No. 23 ranking is based upon its projected finish at the national meet this weekend, as only current-season marks from events that athletes have qualified and declared for are considered in the computer's calculations. Points totals are assigned to those times and marks based upon current-season and historical data, and are then tallied to reach the respective team's points total for that week's rankings.

The Rams' top points contributor toward that ranking is junior Cole Rockhold, who is in line to be the first CSU distance runner to double up on All-America honors in a single indoor season since Bryan Berryhill in 2001. Rockhold, a First-Team All-America performer in the 3,000 meters last indoor season, clocked a program-record time of 7:50.10 at the Husky Classic on Feb. 10 to enter this weekend as the No. 7-seeded runner in the event. The junior clinched his berth and the No. 6 seed in his second event, the mile, after running the No. 2 time in Mountain West Indoor Track & Field Championships history (4:02.13/8:56.85 with altitude conversion).

Senior Mostafa Hassan is CSU's highest-ranked athlete and the team's No. 2 points contributor. The defending indoor shot put national champion is the No. 3 seed in the shot put at this year's NCAA meet after a season-best mark of 67-8 (20.62m) en route to his third consecutive indoor conference shot put title and his fifth conference shot put title (two outdoor) overall.

Senior Grant Fischer accounts for the final points toward the team's total. The native of Fort Collins, Colo., qualified for this year's NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships with a program-record time of 13:44.24 at the Husky Classic in Seattle, Wash., on Feb. 9. Fischer earned Second-Team All-America honors in the 5,000 meters last indoor season.

The Colorado State track & field team will compete at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships this Friday and Saturday at Gilliam Indoor Stadium in College Station, Texas. The meet can be followed live through an ESPN3 broadcast beginning at 4:30 p.m. MT on Friday and at 4 p.m. MT on Saturday. ESPN2 will re-air the meet at 5 p.m. MT on Sunday. Live results will also be made available for the entirety of the meet.
