High jumpers pace Rams in field events, Destinee Rocker matches CSU freshman record in 100-meter hurdles

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Colorado State track & field team capped off its four-day trip to California with solid marks in multiple event areas on Saturday at the Beach Invitational from Jack Rose Track.

The Colorado State high jumpers led the Rams in field events on Friday, with notable performances on each of the women's and men's sides. In women's competition, each of Autumn Gardner and McKenzie Wright cleared 5-8.75 (1.75m), a mark that has only been topped by 48 performers in the NCAA this outdoor season. Sophomore Trenton Wallace turned in a season-best performance in the men's high jump, clearing 6-10.75 (2.10m) to rank at 65th in the NCAA in the event.

On the track, freshman Destinee Rocker matched her time of 13.41 from the Mt. SAC Relays on Friday to place fourth overall and as the No. 2 collegian on Saturday. Rocker's time, which she clocked despite a headwind of -0.2 m/s in Long Beach, Calif., matches her own CSU freshman record and ranks 43rd in the NCAA this outdoor season.

The Rams had multiple highlights in the throws on Saturday, headlined by Austin Blaho's third consecutive personal-best performance in the men's shot put. The senior finished with a best throw of 57-11.25 (17.66m), which ranks 13th on CSU's all-time outdoor list and 66th among NCAA athletes this outdoor season. On the women's side, Maria Muzzio threw within a foot of her personal best in the shot put, finishing with a best effort of 49-0.75 (14.95m). Rounding out top performances in the throws was mark of 164-4 (50.10m) by Kelcey Bedard in the women's discus.

Rounding out highlights in the field events were performances in the women's pole vault. Each of Aliya Simpson and Josie Spitz topped 12-3.5 (3.75m), a mark that ranks as a personal best for Spitz. That height ranks Spitz at No. 8 on CSU's all-time outdoor list. On the track, freshman Jasmine Chesson capped off personal-best performances by Rams with a 400 meters time of 55.43, which ranks 13th on CSU's all-time outdoor list.

IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State head coach Brian Bedard
"I thought that we had some good performances today but I thought it was a little bit of a mixed bag overall. We did have some highlights this weekend, but for this particular trip, I thought we'd have more highlights or more people hitting PRs or peaking here. In some cases, for example, we did have some big throws but they were fouls but would have been personal bests…things like that. We had really good weather and competition, so from that standpoint, I thought we'd have a little more consistent, high-level performances. We'll regroup at Wyoming, tune some things up and get ready for conference."

NOTES
- Of the five NCAA freshmen ranked above Destinee Rocker in the 100-meter hurdles, none have faced a headwind in their respective personal-best performances.
- With his performance on Saturday, Austin Blaho takes over the Mountain West lead in the men's shot put.
