89 Rams named Mountain West Scholar-Athlete for 2017-18

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Seventy-eight Colorado State student-athletes combined to earn a total of 89 Scholar-Athlete awards from the Mountain West for outstanding performances in the classroom during the 2017-18 academic year. Colorado State also had a total of 81 student-athletes receive Academic All-Mountain West honors for the spring and winter seasons. The conference announced both awards on Tuesday.

Fourteen student-athletes earned multiple Scholar-Athlete honors, including Forrest Barton, Jacob Brueckman, Abraham Merinar, Jerrell Mock, Eli Oftedal, Justin Weinmeister, Jenna Anderson, Darby Gilfillan, Ali Kallner, McKenna Spillar and Roxy Trotter. Each earned accolades in each of cross country and track & field.

Of the Scholar-Athletes honored by the MW, 48 hold a cumulative grade-point average above 3.75 and nine hold 4.0 GPAs.

The MW Scholar-Athlete award is among the highest academic honors awarded by the conference. In order to be eligible for MW Scholar-Athlete honors, a student-athlete must have finished at least two academic terms at her or his institution, while maintaining a cumulative grade-point average of 3.5 or higher. In addition, that student-athlete must have participated in competition in her or his respective sport.

Nine Colorado State programs were represented on the Academic All-Mountain West list with 81 student-athletes receiving the award. Combined with CSU's 57 honorees for the 2017 fall season, the Rams finished the 2017-18 year with a total of 138 student-athletes earning conference academic awards.

To be eligible, a student-athlete must have completed at least one academic term at CSU while maintaining a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or better. In addition, that student-athlete must also be a starter or significant contributor to his or her team.
