Rams Set to Say Thank You to Trio of Swimmers

Senior Day comes early for Basile, Box and Goodwyn
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Most of the time, the day is filled with emotions.
Not only is the season drawing to a close, but a career. Family and friends are in attendance. The water works aren't limited to the lanes.
Good thing it's only October.
OK, really it is mostly a weird thing, Colorado State hosting senior day for the women's swimming and diving program before Halloween, but repairs to Moby Pool put the schedule in limbo, so here we are – Saturday, Oct. 28 with Kansas in town for a dual – saying thank you.
Which may also be a good thing for the trio of Andrea Basile, Julia Box and Marie Goodwyn, because goodbyes are so hard.
"I think it's going to be a lot more celebratory than saying goodbye," Goodwyn said. "So we've talked about how hopefully there'll be a lot more laughter than tears."
Basile and Goodwyn have been with coach Christopher Woodard's team for all four of their collegiate seasons, Box joining them last year from Buffalo. All can agree their main mission of collecting memories has already been accomplished, with plenty of room to pack away more.
"I think that there's too many to even count. I have had so much fun on this team and my time here, and it's hard to just think of just one," Box said. "I think some of my favorite memories, and I'm excited for this upcoming trip, too, but I always love training trip. And I think that last year, there was just too, too many memories for me not to just categorize all together as my just favorite memory all together. It was so much fun and there was so much laughter and a little bit of goofiness."
When it comes time for a final sendoff, they'd like to do so in style. They've helped continue the program's legacy of being well rounded, as all three of them have been perfect when it comes to collecting All-Mountain West academic honors, as well as always performing to the level of a conference Scholar-Athlete.
The trio has done their part in the water, too. All three of them have scored points for the Rams at the Mountain West Championships in their careers, and the plan is to add to the total.
"Well, our goal this year is to be top three at the Mountain West conference meet, and I think this team is very capable of doing that," Basile said. "We have a bunch of super-fast freshman this year, and they've been killing it so far. So I'm just really excited to see what we do at Mountain West this year. And we just won two dual meets, so we're already on the path to success. And I think every day of practice, we're just killing it, pushing ourselves even harder. And like I said, the culture that we have this year especially is the healthiest that it's been since I've been here. So that's why I'm just like really excited for this season."
Timing is everything, and at this point, recognition is in order. When Goodwyn hits the water, she's going to continue her normal path routine. She'll chase times, places and points, but more than that, memories. She figures five years from now, when she calls herself a "swammer", those will pop up more readily than a conference finish or a personal best in a race.
So in the stands, they hope the fans will tip a cap and applaud, but please, hold the tears for a more appropriate moment.
