Event with Wyoming, Washington State spans two days

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – After competing three successive weekends, a two-week break has given Christopher Woodard and his team a chance to build up some yardage and fine-tune some technique.

It will help, as Colorado State's women's swimming and diving team heads across the border Friday to swim against Wyoming and Washington State in a double dual at Laramie High School which extends into Saturday and presents some of the longer collegiate events. The Rams have yet to compete in the 1,650-yard freestyle or the 400 individual medley; both are part of the program.

"I think these two weeks, one, try to get healthy. That's most important, and that seems to be our greatest struggle," Woodard said. "Beyond that, we've focused a lot on, at least in week one, getting our volume base up, so doing some aerobic preparation and hopefully some endurance for the back half of our races; that's definitely something that we noticed we were lacking a little bit against Kansas.

"Then the second point was really the fine points, so a lot of technical work, stroke work, not necessarily for any part of the race."

The three teams will compete in 10 events each day (with an exhibition of the 100 individual medley part of the mix Friday). Friday will feature the 1,650 free as the second event (first individual) and Saturday's final individual swim will be the 400 IM. The 400 medley relay to kick off Saturday will also be a first for the team.

Both races present their own unique challenges, and Woodard is glad to get his distance swimmers an early run at both.

"It's always hard for those endurance athletes, specifically with the mile and the 400 IM, because unless we swim it earlier in the season, they don't see it until the middle of the season," he said. "You can train as much as you want, there's no real preparation for those kind of events except racing them. So we're eager to see what our milers and our IMers can do."

Colorado State is 2-2 on the season in duals, 1-0 against Mountain West competition. Wyoming is 3-1 this season (1-1), while the Cougars are 1-3, one of the losses to Nevada, two to ranked Pac-12 foes Stanford (No. 8) and Cal (No. 12).
