Inside Spring Football: Scrimmage 2 shows more balance

Coach Bobo sees bright spots on both sides of ball in two-hour session

FORT COLLINS, Colo.—Spring football is about developing, learning and continuing to fight through adversity, and Saturday's second scrimmage of spring ball showed this Rams team is taking that to heart.

"I thought the guys really, really competed," said head coach Mike Bobo. "I saw a ton of effort by our guys. I saw guys flying around on both sides of the ball. We had some third-down stops by the defense, which I thought was awesome, and we had some third-down conversions by the offense."

The two-hour scrimmage in the Indoor Practice Facility ran close to 100 plays, and allowed the team some quality work while snow continued to fall outside. Both the offense and defense had moments to shine, but also turned things around after struggling at certain points. That resiliency stood out most to Bobo.

"Defensively I thought we started the scrimmage extremely well," Bobo said. "They had a couple stops in a row with the 1s and the 2s. They were excited, and played ball, then the scrimmage kind of turned, but I thought they came back and continued to fight, and continued to bow their neck. I thought the defense continued to step up and make plays. I saw passion out there, I saw guys flying around."

After that early success by the defense, the Rams' offense found its stride and was able to string together some longer drives.

"I thought Collin Hill had a really, really good day today, executing, Bobo said. "He and Patrick (O'Brien) both went with the 1s, but I thought (Collin's) execution was a little bit better. We did have a fumbled exchange between him and Marvin (Kinsey) during the overtime period that allowed the defense to win. He said that ruined his day, but other than that I thought he did a really nice job. He scored in one-minute to win the game—needed a touchdown to win—and so did the 2s. They actually got a touchdown and won, as well. I saw some good things from him."

The periods of offensive success included good balance between the run and the pass.

"I thought the running backs ran hard," Bobo said. "Jaylen Thomas, the walk-on, again showed up big today. I thought he ran the ball extremely hard. Marcus McElroy ran the ball hard, and had a third-down conversion catch out of the backfield that ended up going for a touchdown, about a 40-yard completion and ran through some tacklers, which was awesome."

Like any intrasquad scrimmage, any good is balanced with bad, but Bobo saw enough live on Saturday to know his team made progress from the first scrimmage to the second.

"I thought there was some good and bad from both sides," Bobo said. "The thing that I love was the competition and the effort, and that guys were into it, so there were a lot of good things."

FIGHTING THROUGH ADVERSITY: Coach Bobo provided an example of the defense showing resiliency, which he noted as a positive sign for the team.

"A play that sticks out to me, there was a touchdown to Brenden Fulton on a long throw, and Braylin Scott is the middle-field safety, just misjudged the ball, he tips it and Fulton catches it. It reminded me of the 'Prayer from Jordan-Hare.' He tips it up and Fulton just happens to catch it and scores. We come back and we're doing another third-down drill, and Braylin Scott picks one off and runs it back for a touchdown, which was awesome to see."

NEXT UP: The Rams are back on the field Tuesday, March 5, for their 10th practice of spring ball. The 15th and final practice of spring will be an open scrimmage on Thursday, March 14. The team will take the field just before 5 p.m., and fans are invited to come watch the scrimmage at Canvas Stadium, which will begin around 5:15 p.m. Information on parking and other details will be announced soon.

FOOTBALL AND SOFTBALL DON'T MIX?: Coach Bobo and a handful of his players recently joined the Rams' softball team for a workout on the invitation of head softball coach Jen Fisher. Fisher, whose team is off to a 12-4 start with wins over Stanford, Utah, Nebraska and No. 16 Oklahoma State, is in her ninth year at CSU. RamVision was there to capture the fun and shared the experience this week in a RamWire Exclusive.
