CSU is just six shots out of third through 18 holes
ROCKY FACE, Ga. – In the opening round of the season, Colorado State posted a 10-over total and sits in seventh at the 2019 Carpet Capital Collegiate Friday afternoon. The three-day, 54-hole tournament, hosted by Georgia Tech, is being played at The Farm Golf Club (Par 72 – 7,180 yards) in Rocky Face, Ga.
"I'm happy with our play today, especially for the first round of the season," head coach Christian Newton said. "Most of our mistakes were three-putts, which is common on this course but correctable. I feel good about where this group is right now."
In a field that features five teams in the top 25 and three others receiving votes in the Bushnell Golfweek Coaches Poll, the Rams shot a 298 on the first day in a crowded field where the separation from third to 12th is just 12 shots. Host Georgia Tech is the opening round leader at 3-under 285, five shots ahead of North Florida in second at 2-over 290. Clemson is third at 4-over 292, with South Florida (5-over 293) and South Carolina (7-over 295) rounding out the top five squads.
Senior AJ Ott leads CSU at even-par 72 in a tie for seventh after recording three birdies and three bogeys on the day. Sophomore Davis Bryant is next at 2-over 74, tied for 25th, as a late double-bogey spoiled an otherwise clean back-nine. Junior Cullen Plousha is one shot back of Bryant at 3-over 75, tied for 30th. Sophomore Oscar Teiffel shot a 5-over 77 and is tied for 48th, while junior Parathakorn Suyasri rounds out the effort in a tie for 63rd at 7-over 79, but the Thailand native did record an eagle on the par-5 15th. South Carolina's Jamie Wilson and Luke Schneiderjans of Georgia Tech lead the individual race at 4-under 68 as just six players finished under-par on the day.
CSU will again go off No. 1 tomorrow morning, starting at 8 a.m. and playing with San Francisco and Charlotte.
