FORT COLLINS, Colo. – In his official Colorado State track debut, redshirt-freshman Tom Oates won the mile at the Potts Invitational, earning Mountain West's Athlete of the Week, announced Tuesday by the conference office.

After competing unattached in his freshman season, Oates, of Chelsea, Mich., put on a jersey for the first time last Saturday in Boulder, Colo. for the Potts Invite. He clocked a 4:17.90, leading a caravan of five total Rams in the top-10 of the mile race.

The time is the best among the Mountain West thus far in the season and stands 23rd on the performance list across the country.

The conference award marks the second for the Colorado State track and field teams this season as Allam Bushara won the MW Field Athlete of the Week prior to the holiday break.

On Oates…
"It was a good start for him on the season. If you do an altitude conversation it is right on pace with his personal best. He finished the race strong which is promising, because that is something he struggled at last year. Through cross country season, his training was great, so it is nice to see it translate to his first race in track."
