FEDERAL WAY, Wash. – The second day of competition at the NCAA Zone E Diving meet finished in the preliminary round for both Colorado State entrants, despite having strong days on the 3-meter springboard.

Junior Skylar Williams placed 25 in the field of 49 with a score of 256.00 on Tuesday, with the top 18 advancing to the finals. She was at her best late, scoring a 43.75 on her fifth dive, and her final attempt produced her best score, a 46.80. Williams was 49th last year in the event.

Junior Rachel Holland finished with a score of 229.25 to place 35th overall. Her best dives of the day came in her first and last attempts (42.00 and 41.85), giving her a solid showing at her first Zones meet.

"They just went about their business, and I think that's a big maturity thing for them," CSU diving coach Chris Bergere said. "I thought Rachel competed much better today than she did yesterday, and she was more relaxed. I think when we walk away from this meet and we reflect for two weeks, they're going to learn a lot more then. You learn a lot now, but you also have to filter a lot, and you have to process it. We have a lot of that to do, but this is just such a good exposure thing for our team and our athletes. I think it's a win in every way."

Holland came in with few expectations, other than to enjoy the experience and push herself to do her best. After competing on the 1-meter, she was more prepared for Tuesday's set, and the 3-meter has been her stronger board this season.

She said in the two days she's competed, she has picked up nuances here and there which she feels will definitely make her a better performer next season. Bergere sets up their dive card to start and finish strong, and Holland most certainly walked away feeling the desired effects of the plan.

"I think watching other girls too, you can pick and see things you like in their diving that you want to try to emulate, but also see little kinks in your diving, and how you want to be able to start attacking that and start to work toward the next year," Holland said. "My last dive is my favorite dive in all of diving. I had set a goal for myself, and I saw where I was in the ranks, and I said I'm going to hit this score so I can stay there or be better. It was fun to go off on a high note."

Williams will close out competition Wednesday with the platform. The preliminaries are set to begin at noon MT.
